Winter Camp- President Day Week 2012 February 20-24
Metalsmith - Torch-Fired Enameling

Using the ancient art of fusing glass to metal you will be introduced to basic principles of this process with techniques and procedures including metal preparation, sifting, firing, using wet inlay, applying fine silver foil, mixing colors by layering and stenciling. We will use traditional techniques with funny names such as cloisonné, champlevé, sgraffito, and plique-à-jour as well as experimental techniques such as firing enamel onto mesh forms.
You will create color-rich and beautiful works including pendants, a pair of earrings, and a layered flower form using experiments that consider: temperature and firing process, properties of different enamels and oxides, fusibility and concepts of thermal expansion and contraction.
Co-led by Emma Mankin-Morris, a third generation of working metalsmiths in the Macchiarini family and Chrystal Powell an accomplished metalsmith artist and a graduate of the Academy of Art University, San Francisco .
